Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to intercept vehicles and assess driver compliance with legislative requirements.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to individuals in road transport regulatory roles who are authorised under enabling legislation to intercept vehicles and assess driver compliance with regulatory requirements.It includes checking equipment, intercepting vehicles, assessing driver compliance and acting on any non-compliances found. Knowledge of driver compliance requirements, chain of responsibility legislation and offences under all applicable legislation must be applied. The ability to communicate effectively with drivers, deal with conflict and maintain operational safety at all times are important aspects of the application of this unit of competency.

  • Interceptions and procedures are planned with coworkers to ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice, organisational procedures and standards.

  • Clear and meaningful signals are given to drivers of target vehicles to stop their vehicles in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Agency policy requirements for intercepting vehicles are complied with.
  • Occupational health and safety requirements are followed to prevent injury or damage.

In addition to integrated demonstration of the elements and their related performance criteria, look for evidence that confirms consistency of performance in intercepting vehicles and assessing driver compliance.

This will include evidence of:

intercepting vehicles and assessing driver compliance in actual or simulated circumstances on at least three separate occasions or in three different situations/contexts

using equipment under operational conditions

maintaining operational safety at all times

adhering to legal, ethical and organisational requirements relating to the interception of vehicles and assessment of driver compliance

enforcing legislation within the limits of the officer’s authority

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure access to a real or simulated workplace environment that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered while intercepting vehicles and assessing driver compliance, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and breakdowns in routine.

Access is required to resources such as:

applicable legislation, policies and procedures

case studies and workplace scenarios to capture the range of requirements for situations likely to be encountered

vehicles, equipment and materials generally present in an operational environment

personal protective equipment
